G. Silvanathan (29-10-1954 to 25-9-2009)

G. Silvanathan (29-10-1954 to 25-9-2009)

It came as a shock to hear the passing of a dear friend better known as Nathan, a member of the NPC, and attached with the Health Ministry last night. Always seated on the last chair of the long bar at the club....which some even dub as "Nathan's corner" and speaks very softly and listens to all conversation going on around him, while he nurses a drink.
All who knew him would agree he was a quiet and soft spoken man who was very generous to even strangers he meets for the very first time. A regular in not just at the NPC, but also at a few other watering holes around town too, Nathan was popular with the regulars.
I never said it to his face before but yes, Nathan was a good man ! I have met both his sons, John and George, 22 and 24, studying in India and Ukraine respectively and his even more shy and quiet wife, Josephine, a staff with JKR, a few times before, but this man Nathan loves to hold any conversation with an arguement with me at most times but always shakes my hands before he leaves for the night. Thus was my relationship with Nathan, a deeply "church-going" man, who I last met and spoke to on the night of Friday 18th. September 2009.
According to his family he complained of breathing difficulties on 20th. Sunday, September, the first day of Raya, and was sent to IJN. He discharged himself after being stablilised with medication and insisted he came home on 24th. Thursday to rest and spend some time at home with his wife. Perhaps he knew something we didn't. And he also gave strict instructions to his closest buddy David, not to inform anyone of his sudden ailment.
Nathan died last night at 10:52pm after being admitted at the University Hospital, of further chest pains and open heart surgery performed in the morning, without regaining conscienceness.
Most will remember Nathan a healthy and humble man who accomodated everyone in conversation.
Friends who gathered late last night upon hearing the sudden death of Nathan raised and knocked a few glasses in Nathan's name !
And to Nathan, on behalf of all your friends at the NPC, I say, we'll miss you bro but you will be there seated at "your corner" in spirit always...cheers to you Nathan wherever you are !
This blog will observe a 48 hour period of silence for my friend Nathan.Godbless !
