There are about 150,000 people who were born in Malaysia who are considered potentially stateless people - these are people who do not have birth certs and ICs, born to people who were born in Malaysia. Only 150,000, and of this number about 5,000 are Orang Asli. Why can't the NRD just register them - how difficult can it be?

Even with the people from Myanmar - the Rohingyas and Karens, etc - why can't there be some form of registering. There needs to be a move at ASEAN level to allow members to recognises these people as refugees. The Myanmarese do not have passports and therefore are unable to return to their country.

One of them told me how his friend escaped after he was sold to fishermen in Kedah as bonded labourer (slave) by the officials who caught him in a raid in Klang. A Myanmar woman told me of how she was molested while in police custody.

Every refugee, every immigrant, every potentially stateless person in this country has a sad story and it almost always has something to do with abuses by the officials - immigration, Rela, police, etc.

World Refugee Day, held on June 20, celebrates the lives and contributions of refugees everywhere.

Established in 2000 by the United Nations General Assembly, World Refugee Day was first celebrated in 2001. The date of June 20 was chosen to coincide with Africa Refugee Day.

Each year, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) selects a theme and coordinates events across the globe.

This year, events around the world will focus on the fundamental need for protection. For some, this means economic security; for others, protection is freedom from violence and persecution. On World Refugee Day, we will turn our attention to the millions of refugees who live without material, social and legal protection.
